SEOUL · tomorrow the korean national soccer team will play against argentina. they only have to show their fighting spirit like the last time against greece and everything will just work fine, i'm sure!

a few impressions from the last korean match: we were totally packed with people, it must have been round 500, all in red!





before the game began (and also during and after :) the red devils enjoyed bbq and cool beer

BERLIN/SEOUL: IT'S MATCH DAY - WORLD CUP 2010

my friends, the days, months, no years of waiting are finally over, for it is back: THE WORLD CUP!
we have worked our sweet behinds off to get everything done in time and alas we have succeeded! just in time for summer, PLATOON BERLIN has beautified the yard, we have put up a shiny LED wall, set up the stands, the colours are hoisted and we are ready for all of you to join us for beers, soccer mania and a range of international BBQs.



















daily event are going to be announced on the day on facebook so if you haven't befriended us yet, maybe it is time! also on facebook, we will have a daily LITTLE BEER BET to bring out the soccer freak in all of us. you can post comments with your estimated score and shall be rewarded with a fizzing beer-deliciousness after the game.

for this year's football extravaganza, world cup 2010 in south africa, PLATOON KUNSTHALLE presents a special showcase with photographer marc brinkmeier.

marc brinkmeier is a portrait and documentary photographer from berlin who lived in cape town, south africa for the duration
of four years. his work is focused on authentic life stories and candid situations.
especially the living of the black people in the slums was a central point of his interest.

“my camera is an alternate way to communicate.the presentation of the "rainbow united fc" exhibition is closely adjusted to the reality of a south-african township. out of necessity improvisation is born. everything is used again and alienated."

WELCOME SUN - SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN

first of all we would like to give a warm welcome to the summer sun that has finally joined us here in berlin and that has made the transformation possible. those of you who are following us on facebook might have already noticed: change is in the air. change in the shape of a holistic, thorough and very stereotypically efficient german spring cleaning.



we are about to open our yard again for our raging football loving members, and of course for those of you who simply love to hang out with us in mitte and enjoy the atmosphere. a perfect occasion to give the place a bit of a brush-up!












the whole spiel! the crafts crew take care of the yard.















the others take care of the beautification. kinda like in a hair salon: shampooing, scrubbing and applying some fresh colour.














all of that, so that you guys can have a great World Cup 2010. speaking of which, just as a quick reminder! kick-off is still this friday and we will show it at both PLATOONS.

REVIEW · WORKSHOP VS

last saturday 20 participants had the chance to experience stencil art first hand with the guidance of street artist VS.

VS is a street artist who showcased his artwork two times already here at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. for this special workshop within the scope of NIKE energy space he prepared a program where the attendees could discuss the topic of street art and create an artpiece together with symbols and colors of the korean national soccer team.





many participants had art background so that they started creating their own symbols right away.





after 3 hours of hard work to understand and create stencils the participants could begin with the spraying.





at the end the two pieces, the tiger made by today's teacher VS and the TUHON piece by the students, were proudly presented. the two chinese symbols mean TUHON and stand for the fighting spirit of the korean national soccer team, wishing them the best for 2010 world cup!

BRAND NEW IN KOREA: KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU

finally the day arrived when KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU kicked off on 12 may its pre-opening as part of 'The Flower of May' art exhibition.

KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU is a part of the Asia Culture Complex (ACC), which is set up by the Office of Hub City of Asian Culture (HCAC) initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The site of the famous citizen plaza in Gwangju has special historical meaning to the people of Gwangju for it is the main scene of the unforgettable and cruel event of 5.18, the beginning of the democratization of Korea. Nowadays the plaza is the symbol of spirit of democracy, human rights and peace. The location also serves as a bustling center of gwangju.

The ACC as the main facility of HCAC will be designed and built based on the idea to represent the following three concepts:
- a landmark of the HCAC
- a symbolic edifice reflecting the spirit of Gwangju
- a venue for daily enjoyment of culture for the general public

until its completion in 2014, KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will function as a spearhead to the whole project and give the opportunity to previously experience the cultural development of gwangju as the new Hub City of Asian Culture.

different from any other existing architecture, the building attracts with the 29 piled up containers boxes in a structure of a quadratic cube, while the inside, which can be used as a concert hall or exhibition space, is simple and solid. KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will be divided into several spaces. the video screen on the 3rd floor that can be seen from outside will attract the eyes of the audience. inside there will be a multifunctional space, the “art yard” as an outdoor concert stage, the art library with culture related publications and the art lounge as a place where people can meet and talk. all the spaces are designed in an experimental and flexible way so that diverse cultural contents can be presented freely different than in the usual white-cube-style museum.

KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU can be seen as an independent art project itself. the concept and program involves artists, visitors and the team to interact with each other. this creates new questions, interesting tensions and inspiring moments. cultural development will be experienced by new art strategies which pose questions of contemporary life and a global society. KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will invite korean, asian and global artists to perform interaction art and develop new local aspects according to the city and citizens of gwangju.

GRAND OPENING ON 30 & 31 JULY

after finishing the construction, KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will be officially opened on 30 and 31 July and start impressively with a lively cultural event. during the two days a multifaceted program and parties will take place, including an exhibition of the ACC showcase of PLATOON cultural development as well as live performances with local artists, outdoor movie screenings and parties with djs and vjs. furthermore, from 2 to 28 August the ACC showcase exhibition, diverse exhibitions and talks about cultural activities in gwangju with live performances are in preparation. every saturday night there will be movie screenings with following dj/vj afterparties.
