SUPPORT DON QUICHOTE

heidrun • May 13. 2009 • POLITICAL AFFAIRS
our friend and member, the architect bernhard strecker,
long ago he fought against animals kept in masstocks, industrial mass-killing of animals and generically manipulated farming.
PLATOON supports his fight.

up coming sunday, he organizes the NOVALIS REQUIEM BERLIN with the performance FLOWER IN BUTCHERY - BLUME IM SCHLACHTHOF.
it should be a poetic and arty event with excellent actors angela winkler, almut kühne + bobo.
but together it's an actual manifesto and program with intellectual affinity to the poet-icon of the romantic NOVALIS.
in the village, where he lived and died, now the meat-mafia wants to expand the industrial butchery for killing pigs up to 20.000 every day.

come to this event. it's a cultural delicacy with a great tenor.

ABOLISH MONDAY!

Marcello • May 11. 2009 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
every week is the same... you get to the end of the week-end with a terrible hung over and the next morning you think... bloody monday!!!

so when i saw this streetart cut-out on my way to work i had to smile. if that is a new campaign to really abolish mondays, im definitely with it!

however i could guess straight away who were the mischiefs makers behind it. complice in crime blue&joy are the obvious suspects.... not so long ago i heard them saying that during a street art exhibition in milan they started to play with the idea to take on the streets... mostly because they kept being snubbed by a bunch of so called „real“ street artist who kept pointing out that blue&joy´s artwork had nothing to do with street art... is that true? i think that such elitist view of streetart would definitely be the end of it.

however it seems like they quite enjoyed their urban art escapade... im sure they will be up for it again. watch out for more of blue&joy´s discouraging urban adventures... next time they could be just down your street.

LENDWIRBEL IN GRAZ

Angela • May 8. 2009 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
look what's up in little austria!

what is a LENDWIRBEL???... *lend* is a district of graz - small but great city in austria. LENDWIRBEL is a cultural, art, music, design and exhibition festival in graz. from may 7 - 10 the cultural district-party of *lend* shows creative options using the streets as stage.

streetgallery__ it's experimental design with public space and the representation of the resident art- and creative-scene of the city graz. everyone is invited to represent - by application procedure - the *lend*-district by means of creative inventions. the idea behind: with active and playful reacting on local places should be found a personal view of the city in individual expressions. explaining, representing and experiencing the district *lend*. urban and daily perception-examples relating to places and streets present the district-culture. mariahilferstreet will be a art-mile to amble and enjoy installations and works.

this year about 100 artists are working on 35 streetgallery projects: zweintopf, theater am lend, maiö, cooks of grind, freigangproduktionen, abbey,...

me and some friends also attending:
we planned a *fadenwirbel at lendwirbel*. a "red thread"-twirl presents a complexity of different ways of solutions as a mental activity-game. follow red threads and be surprised about the goals!!!next days i show some photos of our project...

music, djs, party
__ also called "blockparty". nobody will sit calm, everybody is shaking. LENDWIRBEL shows a extraordinary and varied music-programm. shop-windows, streets, pubs and many more are open-air-performance-locations with a mixture of international (clinic) and local (wilhelm show me the major label, le tamtam, fiago) sound-gigs.

lendwalks__ guided tours through the district show the 'lend-feeling'. architecture visualises, historical facts to listen, ... there are also guided tours for visually handicapped people, those are concentrated on the sense of smell, taste or touch.

and__ permanent street-breakfast, architecture-symposia, concerts and dance performances at Onomato - Scherbe - Haarschneiderei, workshops at Medienkunstlabor and Kunsthaus Graz ... for the young and the young at heart :)

bee platoon

Anna • May 5. 2009 • PLATOON.area
In 14 days time a new Platoon branch in Berin-Spandau will be opened. The three containers which are made of high-density styrofoam comply with the "deutsch-normal" norm and are going to host 20.000 workers in the beginning. The workforce is expected to grow to 50.000 during the summer. The complex has its own airfield, living quarters, kindergarden, training facilities and a storage area for honey and pollen as well as its own security service.

The main focus of the "Apis" workers is the production of honey and pollen. For the production of one pound of honey the Platoon crew needs an average of 10.000 working hours in which they visit about 10 millions blossom. The new branch is going to be headed by a queen bee from the island of Sylt and will set new standards in efficiency.

create or die

Julia • May 5. 2009 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
since he won the golden bear at berlinale 2009 for the best short film his name resounds throughout the land.
david o`reilly, a berlin based artist from ireland is one of the new faces in animation and motion graphics. he had his break though with the short film "please say something" and has been doing animation sequences for the film "the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy (2005)".
the aesthetic of his short films is very stripped down - i really like the use of perspectives in "please say something". despite to the often said rawness of his animations, o`reilly says that most of his aesthetic choices are more about economy than finding a unique style. to the question about what it is that enables him to be creative, he answears that it´s the limitations of software- "when your imagination comes into contact with limitations it produces ideas." read the whole interview

david o`reilly definitely brings a fresher feel into the motion graphics and animation business- although he has to commit that it´s hard to earn a living from independent animation projects. in the hope to see more independent projects soon..check out his current works on his website

mission through mecklenburg

Bernhard • May 5. 2009 • PLATOON.members
although summer blinked for a few days last week already - i don't want to withhold my last mission through mecklenburg-western pomerania in march this year. especially around the beautiful lake area, i had the chance to experience some survival training. not that i did run out of water or alcoholic baverages (plenty of beers, wine and whiskey stashed away) - good food in the fridge, and accompanied by my lovely girlfriend - no - we got stuck in the downs of the neverending mecklenburg sand. some people might expect it along beautiful beaches or in the sahara - but not there.
equipped with all you need - shovel, slabs, rocks, warm PLATOON clothing and lots of endurance, after two and a half hours, cold fingers and some final support from a local farmer - we could continue or mission.

rid on with the immortal 30 year old 207 "westphalia".
