Designcluster Asia

Marcello • September 11. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Designcluster brings together four of Asia’s leading metropolises:Tokyo(Japan), Seoul(Korea), Hong Kong(China) and Shanghai(China). the exhibition focuses on young experimental design evolving at the crossroads between various disciplines. the designers’ sources of inspiration flow freely between zen and high technology. thus, the contribution of the Tokyo Musashino Art University comprises objects that recall the spirit of abstract beauty of the traditional Japanese Karesansui gardens into everyday life. with the help of high-tech electronics, Sukwoo Lee from Seoul combines the interaction of audio and light frequencies to create a futuristic lamp design. one of the main aspects of the exhibition is the highlighting of cultural and social influences within the various asian countries, where differences in lifestyle and culture sometimes prove to be much wider than expected. the exhibition will be curated by Joerg Suermann. rather than an trade fair dedicated to produced design, Suermann perceives the exhibition as an overview show that simultaneously deals with young, innovative design, experimental design concepts, and utopia. within this context, he collaborates with local curators such as designer and art director Chio Kim from the Seoul Design Festival. In this way, each design metropolis receives a focus of its own and will deal with individual topics.

we are looking forward to party with you and our asian friends and designers!
Stay wild*

„What makes Shanghai/Berlin addictive?“

Marcello • September 10. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
„What makes Shanghai/Berlin addictive?“ is a creative exchange between Berlin and Shanghai. In September 2006, designers from Berlin previously exhibited artworks in Shanghai about their own fascination of the German capital. Now their Chinese peers have the chance to present their imaginings of their own city in Berlin. The event will be an interactive plattform and a meeting place for creative and interested people, used to enhance existing contacts and ideas. In addition to the exhibition there will be workshops between the artists from both cities. The online community shanghai-addictive opens the project to a global audience and tells about the creative work in both cities.

SEOUL: Lina kim: 'ROOMS'

Jong Ha • September 7. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Tom´s good friend, Hyun-jeong, who works for goethe-institut seoul, invited us to visit: “rooms“, an extraordinary exhibition by Lina Kim at columns gallery.

when i first saw her photos i felt somehow shocked...out of breath.

surrounding us were pictures of a series of empty rooms, all of them had a window through which one could see a natural landscape.

the photographic interiors were realized throughout different seasons over the course of three years, between 2003 und 2006.

i think her eyes can capture something different, something concealed behind the scenes, a feeling of absence, of vanished human activity; a place where nature seems to be glimpsing at us from the outside, leaving one with the impression of being imprisoned in a dilapidated building, cut out from our own perceptions, in a stillshot of time where nature steps back, observing how we consume ourselves and vanish in decay.

the brazilian born Lina Kim (1965) also has Korean origins. she now lives between Berlin and New York.

Shen Shaomin Solo Exhibition · Berlin

Judith • September 3. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Platform China is delighted to present you shen shaomin’s exhibition, fighter-X, curated by wu hung.
this exhibition is one of four connected shen shaomin solo exhibitions that will be shown simultaneously this autumn in beijing.

“the vision of fighter – X is an illusion, which has been created by the reality of chinese life, but its aim is higher than just the fulfillment of dreams.
it is an outstanding contemporary artwork, which not only contains past memories, but also portrays the artist’s perception of the present and the future.
this extraordinary five meter long model is definitely not a toy. naked and strong, its cruel accuracy brings to the audience visions of horrific wars.”

Chin Chin´s finissage

Marcello • August 30. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
yesterday evening i went to pay a visit to Chin Chin´s finissage at total-artspace; she is our beloved streetartist who delighted us last summer with some of her incredible works here on the PLATOON.area.

Emili Theander came to berlin from sweden in 2003, since then she plastered the streets of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg with some awesome, if not gruesome, charachters, coming straight from another world, ready to capture our wandering imagination.

it´s not unsual to walk around revalerstr. or simon-dach-str. and stumble upon these creatures, sometimes watching us through their hands while covering their eyes in a shylike pose, others caught in a dreamlike stillshot where animals and deformed people interact very airily. often they stare at us with hallucinated eyes, as if wanting to say sometihng like a question, one that makes you feel uneasy, leaving behind a taste of the abnormal.

her streetart wallpapers are one thing though, she mostly enjoys drawing oil on canvas, and her works have already been exhibited in several galleries and cafes. as for instance: konsthall C. , letrettage, miss hecker(pic), cafe soylent, lovelite and more.
her street art work can also be seen at bar lucia, oranienstr. 34.

so Chin Chin, thank you so much for sharing with us what tickles your imagination. you´re on the right path. and your genuine modesty in creating such incredible art should embarrass the most arrogant of established artists.

Heyri art village · Seoul

Jong Ha • August 24. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
few days ago i went to visit the heyri art village.

heyri is a very special place for seeing a variety of art genres. they can range from buddhist art, folk musical instruments and traditional food right into figure paintings, video art, butterflies and all sorts of toys.

more then 370 members are joining their creative forces to run this cultural site, among them are: writers, artists, cineastes, architects and musicians, all of them have the possibility to use their own studio ateliers and present their work in galleries and concert halls.

the whole complex of henry village hosts more than thirty small and medium-sized museums.

i also took some pictures of one of the smallest around the museum village: the gumsan gallery, where at the moment is running an exhibition called: china´s art avant-guard.

more insights about seoul are still to come...

all the best
