CRACKING THE CITY

we want to invite everybody to this scientific art project about subcultural movements and interventions in urban context by our PLATOON recruit kuch alias PUF:

"cracking the city is a research project about spatial outcome of subculture. it deals with phenomena of increasing informal creativity and innovative strategies in over-networked society. the process of “cracking” represents dynamic resistance to established urban hierarchy and patterns of behavior. an open-source diagram shows examples of “cracking” illuminating their nature, authors and urban context. everybody is invited to contribute "cracks" to this project."

MONSTER JAM 2009 @ PLATOON KUNSTHALLE IN SEOUL

Hyun--Jeong Kim • June 14. 2009 • KUNSTHALLE
SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 6 PM
DOORS OPEN AT 4 PM

in 2006 the t.i.p. crew (teamwork is perfect) organized the "monster battle 2006". in contrary to regular b-boy battles like the battle of the year individual dancers will compete against each other in a 1-on-1 battle. this form of battle can be harder for the dancers because they have to give 100% with no time to rest. the event was a huge success with hundreds of people left outside because the venue was not big enough to have them all.

this year PLATOON KUNSTHALLE and t.i.p. present the second chapter of the event, the MONSTER JAM 2009. 16 of the best international breakdancers will battle each other. also on stage are several special guests like korea's fastest rapper outsider or the notorious poppin hyun joon. also the monster jam 2009 will give you the opportunity to follow a much anticipated clash between two different styles of crumping: jr tight eyez from the usa and monster woo from korea.

the doors are open from 4pm with freestyle ciphers and bbq. the battle begins at 6pm. the entrance fee is 20.000 won (presale) / 25.000 won (box office). presale tickets are available at http://cafe.daum.net/TIP

"i am from busan" @ agit space

udo lee • June 13. 2009 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
in busan i couldn't miss out on the opportunity to check out busan's subculture space agit. street artist kay2 took some time out of his busy schedule to give us a tour. close to busan university, agit was opened in may 2008 and is basically run by a bunch of people who are known as '재미난 복수' or 'a fun revenge'. they organised mainly public events and street performances and have now found a home in a former kindergarten.
when we were there, a graffiti exhibtion with graffiti artists from busan was on. some of them we will also see again in july at the 420ml exhibition...

big camera

Mata • June 10. 2009 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
While everyone is focused on the new iPhone I found this really favela looking camera, but it just works!!!
Some person in Japan had the idea of making the most powerful camera you can build in your house, he used an EPSON scanner and some old Canon lenses, a lot of tape, glue and some wood to build this 130 megapixel camera. It produces images of 13,068 x 10,173 pixels, it has some noise on the images it takes, but you have to consider that the lenses are old ones, and the scanner is using 1,200dpi, I will say that the system is 20 times cheaper than the most powerful DSLR.
It is really impressive to see the camera working and some of the sample photos you can find on Flickr.
We need to find a new way to use our old stuff, and who knows we may find something great like this scanner camera...
