OPEN CALL FROM CHILE !
Marcello • March 5. 2010 • PLATOON.members
our Chilean PLATOON.MEMBER Gonzalo Rabanal #3084, sent us a message today asking for support... Dear Friends:
Thank you very much to all of you who have either called or written us to know about our situation after the enormous cataclism (giant earthquake) we lived here in Chile. In Santiago the situation is almost controlled but in the regions at the south of Santiago, our brothers from Maule’s region and Bio Bio’s region are still suffering the effects of this devastation: they live desolation, uncertainty and chaos. They are with no food, no water, no power, no medicines, no hospitals because were collapsed. etc.
Against this background I can say that we are experiencing the grief and the shock of emotional and spiritual distress that will extend until everything return to calm. Because the destruction of this tragedy has left many separated from their loveones and fractured with their family’s reality. This mourning has stripped us of our future dreams and interrupts our future’s plans, just suddenly. What is was is no longer, is not anymore. What we conceived yesterday today is not supported. Our lives have changed irreparably , while the rest of the world progresses, our has been arrested and gone down. Finally I want to say that this experience is further proof of courage and strength of human spirit and reminds us the fragility of life.
We could lose a lot of material things, we came down many dreams, we dropped our houses, but we have not dropped our arms.
We will go ahead!! …. with the high spirit in the face of adversity. I invite all friends, artists and performers to join us in this campaign and working with this crusade to help the thousands of Chileans who have lost everything after this terrible tragedy. Following, you will find some addresses and telephon numbers in order to collect donations.
Efforts are well underway to support the recovery in Chile from this earthquake. Some of these are directed to regional man power needs.
Greetings from Gonzalo Rabanal #3084.
Chile DEFORMES coordinator.

Gateway to South East Asia: SINGAPORE
Tutu Lee • March 5. 2010 • PLATOON.operations
We featured a few weeks ago the visit of a Singaporean delegation from the EDB to our headquarters in berlin. Finally we made the trip to Singapore in order to scan the cultural and arts scene and met many interesting institutions such as the singapore art museum, DesignSingapore Council, red dot Singapore, Singapore Tyler Print Institute and valentine willie fine art.
Wondering what Singapore has to offer on the local independent creative & culture side we dived into various spots and discovered The Asylum, Substation, Post-Museum, Osage and the Blackhole, a punk rock off location.
As a gateway to South-East Asia and with its multi cultural population, Singapore is an emerging vibrant spot with a lot of different facets. Strongly recommended for a visit!

REVIEW: MOVIE NIGHT 'RIP! A REMIX MANIFESTO' by BRETT GAYLOR
• February 24. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
SEOUL · last night, the movie 'rip! a remix manifesto' was screened at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. web activist and film maker brett gaylor explores issues of copyright piracy in the 20th century and claims the need of changing the policy in this matter. the protagonist, mash-up musician girl talk makes sample-based songs that enthuse people. he argues current copyright system only limits creating any form of art. the film offered the chance to really think about rationality of existing copyright system. what do you think?
the night had a casual and relaxed atmosphere as always. next movie night is mar. 30 at 8. hope to see you all there!

REVIEW: ARTIST TALK by E
• February 24. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
SEOUL · on this tuesday 8pm, we had a pleasant talking session with our residency artist 'e'. he shared his philosophy, sources of inspiration, and projects in past.while putting emphasis on performance art, he is keen on crossing over various genres like painting, sculpture, video, sound, and movement in a process of creating artwork.
have a look at some of his previous projects.
he is also a member of performance group 'ee'. 'curiosity kills' is a track from their digital single album. two different versions were shown; original and remix.
he tended to visualize racism that he experienced when he stayed in london as an exchange student by putting parts of doll together as one figure.
this is an extension of the project above. message written on t-shirts directly delivers a notion of racism in humorous way; text written in korean means shitty british. the text right below, meanwhile, is 'i love uk'.
this was actually on sale and it was all sold out.
this project starts with an interesting question, 'does genius really exist?' he installed huge banner around a building saying 'e is a genius' with his cell phone number written below. he received various text responses including a lot of swearing, then exhibited them inside the building afterwards.
pursuing fun is definitely his way of creating art.
surprise, surprise! no one ever imagined a residency artist proposing to his girl friend at the artist talk! but e did. it was very sweet, congratulations!

REVIEW: SHOWCASE REBOOT vol. 9 & DJ NIGHT
• February 19. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
SEOUL · last thursday feb 18, PLATOON KUNSTHALLE held showcase reboot vol. 9 organized together with a growing artist group 'a2artist'.kbl, the event organizer of the group and artist himself, giving a welcoming speech. he is passionate about artists getting opportunity to show off their work.
hong seung tae's work began when he watched a video of animals being skinned for fur. he questions human-animal relationship while focusing on various forms of human-cruelty toward other living beings such as animal experiments or factory farms.
cha joo sang talks about humans being extremely incomplete and irrational through his digital characters. rather than criticizing others on this matter, he wants to write and paint for the process of self healing.
main theme of paintings by cho sung hoon is "ego". he chose to depict multiple "i" figures which he calls monodrama. with this witty way of reflecting inner self, he aimed to express "ego" as an independent being created through experience.
jeon seung sook's work is a story about her. she chose bathroom as a setting which is probably the most naturally private space and blue as skin color to gain a sense of self defense.
party time! dj night was led through the night!
thanks to dj unjin and dj flamenco for deriving wild excitement.
from march on, we will have dj night with more spacious setting every thursday. so come out and feel the beat!
good that we prepared the dance floor in front of the dj booth ;)

Marcello • February 17. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
not even one year after the opening of our PLATOON.KUNSTHALLE in Seoul, and we already got several recognitions by reknown institutions and passionate academics alike. the news spread like a buzz, inspiring lovers of Container Architecture from all over the world. so we are excited to announce that Gestalten is finally ready to publish a new book on the topic: Container Atlas – a practical guide to container architecture.
„The book itself presents a wide range of projects in container architecture. It features container structures used as pop-up stores and temporary exhibits as well as sophisticated housing and office spaces that provoke and inspire while setting new standards in functionality and aesthetics“.

we´d like to thank hereby the authors of the book. we have followed the development of the project since we´ve been contacted last year by Sonja Tinney, co-author and member of ExEK , the research team from the department for Experimental Design and Construction at the Leibniz Universität Hannover.
professor Han Slawik and his team have established themselves as international experts in the fields of container architecture and modular building, after years of theoretical and practical experience.
unfortunately the ExEK project has now come to an end... but with great results! thank you again for your passionate work!
we look forward to have the Container Atlas in our KUNSTHALLE.LIBRARY!
