the book society

we felt it is the time for the update of our library. honney, udo, and june attended the book society opening event at korea design foundation located near kwanghwamoon. the book society is a project that supports small self-publishing units. the slogan is 'creating a new culture of publishing'.









there was an opening performance by a cellist on the road. the word 일방통행 means one-way traffic.















many interesting books and megazines were displayed. we purchased 'heavy metal (news) around the world'; a collection of heavy metal news letters published in korea, 'satelite d.i.y.'; sketches and manuals driven by personal future space program, 'welcome to post-toytopia sticky monster lab'; pictures of graphic designed characters in both 2d and 3d and a megazine that featured ohyun's work. you can find them all at the library now.

review of SHOWCASE REBOOT vol. 6

on oct 22, PLATOON KUNSTHALLE held the showcase reboot vol. 6. garoo, seo goun, oh suk kuhn, and saving popculture presented their works at the galleries and had a chance to receive feedbacks in various formats; face-to-face conversations, written words, and little drawings on papers. it was also a nice gathering among artists currently exhibiting and ones from past showcases.







piled up modeled faces wrapped up in plastic wraps and styrofoam containers portray garoo's perspective on consumer behavior in capitalistic societies. piled up objects displayed directly speak to people about awareness of over-consuming.











seo goun received many questions related to the concept of the work. she said that she wanted to express and grieve over things that exist between boundaries; between life and death, between reality and surrealism. she also wants her works to be considered as modern surrealistic art rather than just surrealism that has been existed.

oh suk kuhn discovered a witty way of approaching to most stereotypical characters in korean textbooks; chulsoo and younghee. the artist relates these characters to his childhood memories such as hiding inside closet, becoming curious about sex, and jumping down from the rooftop wearing superman outfit. people had elfin smiles when looking at his work.











saving pop culture took credit for making music video being accepted as a form of art at oberhausen. individuals took their time to really observe fresh collaboration of sound and images.

in his work‘the text book' oh suk kuhn presents photos of characters wearing strange masks symbolizing chulsoo and younghee, two stereotypical figures in korean textbooks. the photos create a weird atmosphere in which memories, phantasy and the present overlap.

saving popculture:
the international short film festival oberhausen was the world’s first festival to accept the music video as an art form in its own right and to allocate it to a competition category of its own. the music videos shown here are produced between the years 1998 and 2003 and embrace a wide spectrum of forms of expression.

Award for PLATOON KUNSTHALLE

In the 4th consecutive year the kangnam district office exhibited the most beautiful buildings established in 2009.

yesterday platoon kunsthalle received an award as one of the most beautiful buildings. the award ceremony was held at the COEX where tom, our architect firm U-IL and construction company hyo jeong (효정개발) attended.

NIGHT FLEA MARKET vol. 2 @ PLATOON KUNSTHALLE in seoul

last saturday, bling magazine and PLATOON KUNSTHALLE presented the 2nd night flea market. people started coming in much earlier than 8 and the place was quickly filled with great energy. big thanks to those who participated! increased numbers of both sellers and buyers showed the genuine affection to this fast growing event. enthusiasm!

buyers were flattered with various unique items like knitted necklaces, hand-made leather accessories, lomo cameras, and very stylish vintage clothings.

dj udo and dj shannon seized the night with gratifying tunes while tasty hot dogs and sangria were avaiable to enjoy.

good times!







look how crowded it got! at times, i had to squeeze myself into the crowd to get a glimpse of goods. the market was full of energy.







the stairway became a part of display. lovin' the vibrant colors of the garments.














personal vintage clothings certainly have special charm to them.












vj pryme once again splendidly led the auction. 6-7 rare items selected by bling megazine were sold. proceeds of the auction will go to needy neighbors at the end of the year.

GERMANY'S ARCHITECTURE A VOYAGE IN DIVERSE SCALES

a bit late but here is finally the report about the opening of germany's architecture exhibition that took place on 8 october.









63 projects were presented on the first floor at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. on third floor there was another exbition by NAX paten [NAX support group] from germany. the exhibtion can be seen until 24 october.

























since it was a collaboration with the german embassy, german ambassador hans-ulrich seidt came to visit. he presented a warm speech that added to a cozy night. ralf zabel, the representative for NAX support group in korea, held a speech in both english and korean. thanks to ralf zabel and andrea kundrus, culture attache at the german embassy, for organizing this exhibition!

MILLER FRESH M COMPETITON - STAGE 2

every time we have a big event or party, especially the bar crew has a hard time and does their best. as usual, the team was ready to fight, this time with bandaged hands.










we all decided that the best dressed PLATOON member was bartender yoon kyeong.
































before we opened the door, all jury members and artists were busy giving interviews to mtv.
kazufumi kimura is having an interview with mtv's vj son han byeol.
















the two funny guys from the band kap10kurt had an interview as well.




















1500 people came for this event. by now it almost a familiar thing to have this kind of atmosphere.















4 selected audio/visual teams had a big competition and in the end mindbusters and east collective made it to the final stage.














in the graphic design section kimhaemin and kang jin went on to the final stage.















kap10kurt rocked the party with a great live performance until people got exhausted.

our first night flea market with magazine bling on 5 september was featured in the morning news on the korean public tv channel kbs. have a look! maybe you will recognize some familiar people^^
