pecha kucha night seoul

udo lee • May 6. 2008 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
last week the first pechakucha night seoul of this year took place in the house club m2. here are some of the highlights:

yong kwan presented a project called syllabrick, basically modular toy figures. the form of the modules is based on a linguistic research of phonemes of the korean language. he digged deeply, tracing its historical roots of hangul that at the same time represents the phonetic language and the cosmological relation between humans and the universe.

kim mujun has a passion for baseball fields, swimming pools, track fields and soccer fields. in a moment of boredom he looked for baseball fields, swimming pools etc. in google earth, collected them and turned his fascination into pieces of art, strict formal abstractions of such athletic areas.

my personal favourite was the presentation of the chill magazine, one of seoul's freshest underground magazines. so far three issues have been published, dealing with the city of seoul and the elderly. to be honest, i forgot what the last issue was about, but i love it for the diy 3d glasses...

next time we will introduce the KUNSTHALLE.seoul project so stay tuned ^^

Architectures of Survival

Alex • April 28. 2008 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Spring is here ! After a cup of coffee on this nice and warm Sunday afternoon philipp and me headed over to sparwasser hq who were hosting 'Architectures of Survival' until yesterday, an exhibition curated by Brussel based collective Komplot.

After some explanations and chit chat with the curators, we strolled around in the rooms. Besides some smaller pieces of art, the results of a play-dooh explosion covering the whole room proves the open and process-oriented approach of the gallery. We like it !

A little later romanian architects ‚StudioBasar’ gave a really interesting lecture about legal housing evictions in Bucharest. (they promised to send some more pictures)

Since the fall of communism in Romania the law enables pre-communist house owners to reclaim their former property.

StudioBasars public proposal „Evicting the Ghost“ documents how law forces citizens, that moved in during communism, to evacuate their houses in order to return them to the former owners.

As a consequence and a form of protest, affected inhabitants move in so called „ghost houses“ - stacks of furniture wrapped in foil - on the sidewalks directly in front of their former domicile.

It’s quite impressive how they manage to handle this situation and improve the temporary „houses“ over time.

Artist Yan Renand works with different objects and creates a process of transformation by mixing painting, food and growing vegetation in plastic bags. He spent most of this evening in doing a “knitting” performance in which he created small objects made by strings.

In the basement of Sparwasser hq we found some interesting video works by Christine Woditschka , Meiya Lin and David Blandy which gave us reason to discuss our different tastes of visual art.

On top of all that, chatting with interesting people and drinking a beer in comfortable atmosphere, made it a really nice evening.

artists in berlin

heidrun • April 22. 2008 • URBAN COMMUNICATION

Yesterday I read the following article in the newspaper and got me thinking, if one of the most famous artists in the world says such things. can our city be so stupid?

The danish artist olafur eliasson goes heavy against his adopted city berlin.

„ I believe the city could have profit much more from the creativity assembled over here“, said the 40 year old to the Spiegel. The museums didnt try even once to contact some of berlin´s resident artists, who are exhibiting their work worldwide, just not in berlin itself."

Eliasson, to whom MoMa dedicated a huge exhibition starting from sunday, has adopted, according to information, two african children with his wife.
He runs an atelier in berlin with around 30 employees, but leads his family life in Copenhagen. in the german capital, he said „ there is a distinct phobia towards dark-skinned people“. He wants to protect his children from that.
