Misplaced advertising

Judith • August 8. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
the „itambe“ enterprise is making what I consider an all out assault on women dignity.
classic movie scenes are reworked to feature „larger“ ladies für example mena suvari in american beauty- the tagline ist the kicker "...forget about it. men’s preference will never change. fit light yogurt."
this kind of advertising goes against the general tendency of corporate social responsibility like dove, who tries to show „normal“ women in their publicity. dove increased fifteen per cent of sales since the release of the new poster, where you can see six chubby women.
since september they enhance workshops for young women with eating disorders.
maybe the first thing they should learn is to close their eyes and to avoid stupid untasty light yogurt advertising.

FESTIVAL ARS ELECTRONICA 2007 - GOODBYE PRIVACY

Angela • August 1. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
again something from my hometown linz (austria) ...

the annual (since 1979) and by now also international known ARS ELECTRONICA is a festival for art, culture & technology. this year the festival is devoted to the topic 'GOODBYE PRIVACY'.

a new culture of everyday life is now upon us, bracketed by the angst-inducing scenarios of control and the enthusiasm of medial self-profiling. everything seems to be public and nothing’s private anymore. panopticon or freedom (of opinion)? this perfect control is fascinating and concurrently frightening.

by symposia, exhibitions, performances and interventions, the ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL will search out what the public and private spheres mean and the interrelationship between them. the issues, themes and even the framework of the festival itself will blend into a fleeting illusion - so it becomes impossible to differentiate between virtual and real spaces and for a week linz will be a 'second city'.

the combination of the traditional annual program and new program-extensions makes 'GOODYBYE PRIVACY' (again) to a unique festival. among other things this year completely new is the 'mobile atelier' - a prototypical container-modul as a artwork, which concurrently offers a workspace for artworks and exhibitions. another experiment is 'bastard space': ars electronica and stephan doesinger start the first 'architecture contest' in second life, a public contest for architecture and design.

sure, the festival will be also this year a great cooperation of diverse cultural and artistic acts - national (e.g. university of art linz, lentos, ok center) and international (e.g. udk berlin, media university switzerland, fabrique paris).

RIDDLE: contemporary dance at dock11

Marcello • August 1. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
RIDDLE is a dance performance by Morgan Belenguer and Melanie Lane in collaboration with filmmaker Eva S.Aridjis. It is a creation inspired by themes such as taxidermy, black and white film, fragility, zen, searching, transformation and preservation.
Eva S. Aridjis’s film “Taxidermy – the art of imitating life” visits the world of short black and white video excerpts of a taxidermy workshop in texas during the 80’s while Morgan and Melanie go through a physical journey that moulds, transforms and breaks force using objects such as glass, clay and a mysterious fox.

The soundtrack consists of artists such as John Cage, Bach and Kach Jiyean Gayageum (a contemporary Korean composer) all of whom resonate zen-like ambience in diverse tones. Whereas tracks from electronic music artists Otto von Schirach and Errorsmith bring a driving force in contrast. RIDDLE rides on the border between fantasy and reality, provoking an emotional yet abstract journey, questioning ones perception of time, space and situation, constructing in end effect…an unanswered riddle.

The performance will be presented on the 2.3.4.5 of August at DOCK 11 (Kastanienalle 79) and will start at 21:00.

Everyone is welcome to come around…and try to solve the RIDDLE!

'nonspheres iv' by luis berríos-negrón

Angela • July 11. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
luis berríos-nergrón is an architect and artist from puerto rico. luis received a bachelor of 'fine arts degree' from parsons school of design and the 'master of architecture degree' at MIT. he already collaborated with popular artists - just to name a few: larry clark, silvia kolbowski, jean gardner. in 2005 he obtained the harold and marlene schnitzer prize for visual art and he was also awarded for the michael-kalil-award. currently he lives in berlin, where he develops projects in digital prototyping and fabrication with targa, graft, michel de broin and program. his work produces affirmative intersections between technology, geopolitics and art.

opening on july 19, 19:00
exhibition: july 19 - august 18
(thuesday - friday 14:00-19:00 / saturday 11:00-19:00)
program - initiative for art & architectural collaborations, invalidenstr. 115, berlin-mitte

NONSPHERES IV is the latest work of luis berríos-negrón's investigation into the contemporary tension between nature and technology. this project will take the shape of a digitally generated lattice. the simulation of a carbon tetrahedral lattice will fill the whole gallery - suggesting a continuous remote set of relationships, intended to incite what freud calls 'oceanic feelings' (or infantile sensation of oundlessness between the ego and the outside world) and it's further supported by works on two geopolitically charged locations – teufelsberg (berlin) and bibi mahro (kabul).

we've already reported about luis berríos-negrón.
