BRAND NEW IN KOREA: KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU

Hyun--Jeong Kim • May 29. 2010 • PLATOON.operations
finally the day arrived when KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU kicked off on 12 may its pre-opening as part of 'The Flower of May' art exhibition.

KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU
is a part of the Asia Culture Complex (ACC), which is set up by the Office of Hub City of Asian Culture (HCAC) initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The site of the famous citizen plaza in Gwangju has special historical meaning to the people of Gwangju for it is the main scene of the unforgettable and cruel event of 5.18, the beginning of the democratization of Korea. Nowadays the plaza is the symbol of spirit of democracy, human rights and peace. The location also serves as a bustling center of gwangju.

The ACC as the main facility of HCAC will be designed and built based on the idea to represent the following three concepts:
- a landmark of the HCAC
- a symbolic edifice reflecting the spirit of Gwangju
- a venue for daily enjoyment of culture for the general public

until its completion in 2014, KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will function as a spearhead to the whole project and give the opportunity to previously experience the cultural development of gwangju as the new Hub City of Asian Culture.

different from any other existing architecture, the building attracts with the 29 piled up containers boxes in a structure of a quadratic cube, while the inside, which can be used as a concert hall or exhibition space, is simple and solid. KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will be divided into several spaces. the video screen on the 3rd floor that can be seen from outside will attract the eyes of the audience. inside there will be a multifunctional space, the “art yard” as an outdoor concert stage, the art library with culture related publications and the art lounge as a place where people can meet and talk. all the spaces are designed in an experimental and flexible way so that diverse cultural contents can be presented freely different than in the usual white-cube-style museum.

KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU can be seen as an independent art project itself. the concept and program involves artists, visitors and the team to interact with each other. this creates new questions, interesting tensions and inspiring moments. cultural development will be experienced by new art strategies which pose questions of contemporary life and a global society. KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU will invite korean, asian and global artists to perform interaction art and develop new local aspects according to the city and citizens of gwangju.

REVIEW: EAT CAKE SUNSET PARTY

dongmi lee • May 26. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
last saturday, the first EAT CAKE SUNSET PARTY opened on our rooftop at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. Shortly after the party began rain started coming down on us as we have worried a little bit, but of course no rain could stop our party!
It surely would have been better with sunny weather, but nobody cared about the little bit of rain. that was one of the cool things, I think.

many new faces could be seen this afternoon that we usually don’t meet at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE before and enjoyed our special brunch with selected foods.

producer/dj matheus k and resident dj baya rocked the rooftop and made people dance till after sunset.

EAT CAKE PARTY by ire cortes have been presented 3 times already at different places, but a EAT CAKE SUNSET PARTY with brunch is a new concept party, held for the first time, and we all hope to have this chillaxing party at our rooptop bar again.

the party host, ire cortes poses with bright smile and mimosa.

WORLD CUP 2010 IS ON!

sophie • May 20. 2010 • PLATOON.members
hey guys.. all good things repeat themselves, so here it comes: THE PLATOON BERLIN WORLD CUP 2010 IS ON! we've just started the preparation phase of this years football extravaganza. For those who don't remember the WM 2006, please check out the 2006 showreel.

most of you know that we've moved since the last time we've met for football, drinks and bbq, so things have changed slightly. we've downsized a bit, meaning no pool! (OH NOOO) ha, well thank god that we've kept the bar, the bbq and the LED, and it's better then ever.

official kick-off for this years WORLD CUP is june 11th.
we, at PLATOON, will once again open our gates for all of our members, or for those of you who have always wanted to enjoy football and a cold beer (for it will be summer and warm by then!) away from the public football madness.

we will be showing all evening games throughout the week and of course all the germany games that happen throughout the day (which will be on the 18th of june 13:30 so put it down in your calendar!).

since we've established a real close bond to korea, due to the PLATOON.KUNSTHALLE and our new KUNSTHALLE. GWANGJU project, we will also be showing all korean games. this will happen in collaboration with yam yam, the awesome korean restaurant down the road, so make sure you don't miss out on the korean bbq (dates: 12.6. 13:30 – 17.6. 13:30 – 22.6. 20:00). on weekends we will be showing all games, accompanied by an all-day bbq, and live entertainment (line-up to be announced!).

you will also be delighted to hear that our two bar ladies jette and polly will once again rock the bar with us, also as a warm-up for the donnerstags-bar season ahead.

the WORLD CUP will be a great opportunity to update your dog tag and all the info we have from you, for we will be launching the online network shortly. so please make sure you bring the dog tag along and a few minutes to update your data with our recruitment officer.

there will be a live-stream to PLATOON.KUNSTHALLE in seoul and all of our friends over there. but we'll tell you more about it as the date draws closer, so stay tuned.

Marcello • May 19. 2010 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
time is running out for the Schmiede 2010 application!
every year since 2003, the SmithNetwork gathers in Hallein, Austria, to network, create and present their ideas.

about 140 international creatives from all sorts of backgrounds come together for 10 days in september, to inspire each other, present their projects and create new visions for the future.

Schmiede is like a bootcamp for creatives who want to see their visions find a place in reality.

the SmithNetwork moves along the borders of art, culture, handcraft and the creative industries. at Schmiede you will find people coming from several different disciplines such as: music, performance, architecture, guerrilla marketing, philosophy, programming, real time cinema, engineering, youth culture, law, history, and many diverse fields of art.

Schmiede takes place in an old salt refinery, a huge place of about 2000m2 with enough space to let ideas run free. the smiths provide the infrastructure and a network of specialists to support the whole creative process.

there are no hierachies at Schmiede, no teachers and no students. everyone is there to teach&learn from each other, to make new connections and find associates for future collaborations.

the SmithNetwork is in fact more like a community of free thinkers, a collective process involving real people who want to exchange their knowledge and contribute to the creation of new strategies to make ideas happen.

the festival ends with an exhibition where the Smiths present to the public what they produced during the ten days of collaboration.

if you want to take part to Schmiede10 you should definitely APPLY NOW!

REVIEW: PLATOON PRESENT :HUNEE

dongmi lee • May 17. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
last thursday night PLATOON KUNSTHALLE presented the first episode of a special party series with dj hunee from berlin. he presented some real disco music -a rare thing in this city. i felt like he really put big passion and effort for digging out and playing music to us.

after a nice set of our homie dj bedalboy, we followed hunee to the 70s and 80s and enjoyed his funky and soulful music injection. his cool music kept people dancing and dancing until the end.

we will develop more special party concepts and themes for this party series! be prepared for crazy summer parties~
