"music is a dish best served raw" - coleridgedish play uplifting rock, they have taste, and are here to satisfy your veracious appetites. a band of professional musicians who, more than anything, want to enjoy every second on stage as if it were their last.
they overflow with energy, bursting at the seams with positive power. they cook up stormy banquet of sounds, served from the heart and ready to be enjoyed. (video)
british singer, espin (the gecko), has lived in berlin since moving from italy in 2004. the band was masterminded and orchestrated by holger, the tight and powerful drummer. giving experience, body and flavour to the band are helge (bass) and celli "the jaguar" (guitar). the sound is original and innovative and at the same time familiar and catchy.

thetape vs rqm
Marcello • August 22. 2006 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
an old mixtape was the initial source of inspiration for this musical project. punk, jazz, hip hop and electronica have all been dubbed on to this tape, only to be recorded over again with an entirely different music genre. the axis through which this styleclash is linked is hip hop. not hip hop in the conventional sense though, more the boundaries on hip hop crossing over into electronica, post rock and idm. being also the producer of berlin band jahcoozi, robot koch has gained a lot of expericence when it comes to clashing genres. john peel played their hit single FISH several times on his show. they played live shows alongside with aphex twin and airborne audio.
for his album auto reverse robot koch joined forces with emcee RQM to take hip hop to the next level.
If any emcee could fluidly move between different musical genres and sound hott - it would have to be
RQM:: recognize the quest is mental. writer, spoken word artist emcee. the voice of al haca, also featured on the tape, jahcoozi, i-wolf, stereotyp, tolcha, stefan rogall, innocent sorcerors, atom hockey etc. currently working on the follow up self titled al haca record!!!

autonervous

"street theatre and grand opera at the same time"richard fantina, east village eye, nyc.
after the demise of the vanishing, jessie evans
decided to team up with bettina koster (ex-malaria!).
the result is autonervous. this self-titled debut is very unique and cannot be easily categorized, a mix of all kinds of styles: pop, new wave, rocksteady, trip-hop, krautrock, latin, disco, deathrock, film and free jazz.
Both women sing and play saxophone and have created the sound organically, so even though it is electronic its much more natural; the atmosphere is loose yet gripping,
inviting visitors to come closer - like they want to
catch you in their web but once they do they will
shower you with kisses and if youre lucky throw you
on the floor.
their music is also very theatrical,
taking the listener deep into surreal and unexpected
places with each track. (article)
*a track of their new album will also be on the upcoming
chicks on speed compilation 'girl monster' with 60+
womens bands.
especially for this occasion, which coincides with the
end-of-season berlin concerts (as they will be moving to italy soon), bettina and jessie have incorporated a very special drummer into their set: toby dammit . the true story behind this man leaves some dizzy-headed
*and prepare your bellies for betti´s burgers as we will be tasting bettina´s farewell specialities accompanied with some homemade moonshine eau de vie

federal lawn exhibition or what brings the future
heidrun • August 15. 2006 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
it was well intentioned by the monopol, many interested parties came to pay a visit to the event, which was friendly greeted by dean prof.dr.michael zürn in the audimax schlossplatz nr.1
. the hall was full. Yellow box, here today, gone tomorrow, camaleon or white cube. these are just few of the inspiring logos after which reknowned architecture firms were named in occasion of the temporary museum.
but then unfortunately, there was a podium totally lacking of that correspondent dignified position.
mr boddien of the castle, mr wulln of the national gallery, art gallery owner christian nagel and mr ingolf kern of the monopol. with the endorsment of the humboldt forum regarding the construction of the castle and two lone fighters lacking of passion. it was just inadequate. nothing can get stimulated this way, few ideas can win ground and nothing will be taken on, what remains is just an exasperating discussion about the whole purpose, spirit and reason of the castle and of the temporary museum. instead, in the process, there should have been a discussion and debate about an interim use of the premises not an occasion to lift old graves what a shame.

heidrun • August 14. 2006 • POLITICAL AFFAIRS
A temporary museum for the art of todayfollowing this theme, the artmagazine monopol, with support of the hertie-school of governance for architecture offices, has been encouraged to put some good thinking into place about the temporary use of the building.
the Spiegel and other printmedias had already reported about it
tonight at 19:30 o´clock the concepts will presented and delineated at the former state council building and there should be also a debate taking place with both sustainers and opposer, moderated by gert scobel (3sat kulturzeit)
the architecture firm from Stuttgart bottega+erhardt, ties in with the former Palast´s subject matter to this point: a place for and of our republic
they will be giving to the 20.000m2 base area a red tartan coating which in turn will be sided by 16 black stairways through which they lead an appearing floating yellow woodenbox. The stairs would be ending in 16 separate white rooms which measure respectively 1.250 m2. all of them will have to be filled with art by the 16 federal states of germany.
all designs have something in common, they are an idea and have to be regarded as such. until now they served only as encouragement. nevertheless, what needs to be happening with them now, is to this date unclear. perhaps the outcome will be that the project wont keep existing only as an arty-game afterall, but the idea of it will be followed also in the future, something I personally find to be as very preferable.
but then again, to be totally honest with you, i still often hope that all this stupid matter about rebuilding the city-castle will not achieve its purpose.

the quest of an artist
Marcello • August 10. 2006 • PLATOON.members
"kabul matters" is an art-project directed by luis berrios-negron, a puertorican artist and conceptual architect, living in berlin. the artwork was commissioned by rahraw omarzad; director and founder of the centre for contemporary art afghanistan and was executed during the time of the berlin biennale 2006."the motivation behind this art-project was to inspire a sense of hope in the people of kabul. it was for this reason a green theme was established, symbolizing rebirth in the afghani culture". - luis
kabul is a city of overwhelming disarray; with no solid infrastructure, no garbage disposable system, frequent power failures, and extremely limited access to water resources. kabul is a city that for centuries has seen social, economic, and political instability, not only in the recent past with the control of the taliban regime.
it is a real challenge to be a woman in kabul these days. woman have no access to education, as a matter of fact girl schools are still being burnt down, like recently in helmand- south of afghanistan- one of the last strongholds of the talibans. - luis
as a woman, the streets of kabul used to be very dangerous:
before, during the taliban rule, if you had shown even just a glimpse of your ankles or you walked the streets without company, you may have incurred the risk of getting stoned to death. - luis
the project itself consisted of a performance involving several people carrying a gigantic green cloth up a hill where a large billboard was displayed.
the green-drapery was than ufolded over the massive billboard, which during the soviet union regime displayed strict, political slogans. - pictures -
bibi mahro, the hill, rises from the middle of the city. on its very top we would find the remains of a remarkable soviet olympic sized pool
"this served as a tool for promoting a sense of community, providing a platform whereto combine their ideal of athletics with their political ideology in other words: propaganda". - luis
during the taliban regime the hill was used for its strategic position as a military stronghold. In fact one may still observe (as shown on the google earth map), the remains of an exploded tank on the right of the pool.
some people said, the pool itself used to be the taliband´s favorite place for executing prisoners and dissenters. - luis
initially, the performance was supposed to be carried out by only a group of painting students but a random and curious crowd, mostly composed of children, joined forces in this symbolic gesture, giving it an edge of solemn ritualism. as a result, the performance turned out to be an authentic experience; not only a staged ceremony.
as a sign of gratitude, luis gave a workshop for the students of the institut, introducing them to the berlin biennale. this was running at the same time of the project.
*we would like to thank the photographer massoud hosseini for the very touching pictures documenting "kabul matters".
most of luis berrios artworks seem to be defined by a need for denouncing extreme social conditions.
however, his main preoccupation does not appear to be one driven by sterile criticisms. more accurately is seems to be paving the way for solutions. the striking factors, when faced with his work include the interaction of contrasts, subtle sarcasm and a passion for provocation. these are all ingredients that make him a remarkable artist fighting for reconnecting loose ends, where individuals or whole communities are living in fear, lacking a sense of hope or blinded by consumerism.
this was the case for tzunami safe(r), a housing project for tzunami stricken communities in sri-lanka. the project was conceived through carlo ratti and the prajnopaya foundation as a psychological tool meant to give a renewed sense of optimism to people struck by this sort of catastrophy -- a move to ease them from their constant fear.
the government of sri-lanka had infact already planned to move an entire sea side community approximately 2km inland. this was something unthinkable for people whose main sustainability was based on the ocean.
another example of his guerrilla-style, sarcastic exhibitions infiltrating the strongholds of corporate establishment was the project "people's republic of z pod", which runned under the tutelage of lot-ek, an innovative and very succesful architect duo in ny. in this case, luis wanted to create a transitional object symbolizing the condition of consumerism and how it affects social disparity.
z pod is infact a housing system made out of cut-out, collaged billboards which would provide housing for young aspiring models and exploited sweatshop workers in new york.
the reality of sweatshop workers is still very real in new york as in many other countries around the world. - luis
the project was presented for two hours at the diesel-denim gallery in soho where a pair of jeans can easily cost $200500! the humor was seen in the missunderstanding of those operating the gallery, as they did not realize exactly what the performance was about right up untill the final point. this project fundametally criticised their entire industry and blantely made fun of them.
a video documenting this project was recently shown at the filter gallery in hamburg, with certainly far less complications.
*we would like to thank luis berrios-negron for allowing us to showcase his work and for the very interesting and inspiring chats we had here in Platoon.
