PARAFLOWS FESTIVAL 'UN_SPACE'/ VIENNA
Angela • September 13. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
whats going on in austria???? here a tip for my part
PARAFLOWS FESTIVAL 2007
annual convention for digital arts and cultures
september 13 23 / vienna, austria
the topic of the 2nd annual festival in vienna is 'UN_SPACE'. between the ars electronica festival and the steirischer herbst, PARAFLOWS is a fairly new, but really recommendable, festival. it functions as a platform for the local net art & culture scene and as an interface to the more famous domestic international positions within media art.
the festival title 'UN_SPACE' shows the exploration of inaccessible, invisible, theoretical and immaterial spaces. its a matter of spaces, which are physical unseizable or more precisely its about unseen, immaterial and theoretic spaces.
an worth seeing project will be jacob kirkegaards (denmark) examination with spaces in prohibited zones of tschernobyl. by means of an audiovisiual installation its possible to get acustcal and visual an insight in those prohibited zones, which are closed since the tschernobyl-disaster in 1986. about 30 kilometres around the atomic power plant is closed since more than 20 years and deserted.
further interesting projects:
interfaces of sea shows the sea as media for data transfer e.g. by sonar-technology (at quartier21)
exhibitions at CAT (contemporary art tower)
workshops by metalab vienna
altogether 25 impressive projects are shown at MAK (flakturm arenberg) in vienna - and every night: concert/party!

heidrun • September 11. 2007 • POLITICAL AFFAIRS
the future of our world was determined by this occasion. and my future was directly influenced by it as well, because i was in nyc during that tragic september, and i was supposed to begin a new future over there. the decision to move to u.s was at first a very unusual one for me, something that was mostly due to my desire to change my personal life than being driven by political reasons. however after 4 weeks it was not possible for me to stay anymore, because the whole nation fell in a psychotic trauma which freezed life completely and i just couldn't stand it any longer.the war in iraq, guantanamo bay, many assassinations all over the world...thats´ what has followed. today.
a new debate about people converting to islam started in germany, furthered by the government!!!
this two men didn´t look like having a dialogue in 2001. quite on the contrary: they pushed with aggressions the worlds political stage and cherished a viper in their bosoms.

Designcluster Asia
Marcello • September 11. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Designcluster brings together four of Asias leading metropolises:Tokyo(Japan), Seoul(Korea), Hong Kong(China) and Shanghai(China). the exhibition focuses on young experimental design evolving at the crossroads between various disciplines. the designers sources of inspiration flow freely between zen and high technology. thus, the contribution of the Tokyo Musashino Art University comprises objects that recall the spirit of abstract beauty of the traditional Japanese Karesansui gardens into everyday life. with the help of high-tech electronics, Sukwoo Lee from Seoul combines the interaction of audio and light frequencies to create a futuristic lamp design. one of the main aspects of the exhibition is the highlighting of cultural and social influences within the various asian countries, where differences in lifestyle and culture sometimes prove to be much wider than expected. the exhibition will be curated by Joerg Suermann. rather than an trade fair dedicated to produced design, Suermann perceives the exhibition as an overview show that simultaneously deals with young, innovative design, experimental design concepts, and utopia. within this context, he collaborates with local curators such as designer and art director Chio Kim from the Seoul Design Festival. In this way, each design metropolis receives a focus of its own and will deal with individual topics.we are looking forward to party with you and our asian friends and designers!
Stay wild*

What makes Shanghai/Berlin addictive?
Marcello • September 10. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
What makes Shanghai/Berlin addictive? is a creative exchange between Berlin and Shanghai. In September 2006, designers from Berlin previously exhibited artworks in Shanghai about their own fascination of the German capital. Now their Chinese peers have the chance to present their imaginings of their own city in Berlin. The event will be an interactive plattform and a meeting place for creative and interested people, used to enhance existing contacts and ideas. In addition to the exhibition there will be workshops between the artists from both cities. The online community shanghai-addictive opens the project to a global audience and tells about the creative work in both cities. What makes Shanghai addictive?

SEOUL: Lina kim: 'ROOMS'
Jong Ha • September 7. 2007 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
Tom´s good friend, Hyun-jeong, who works for goethe-institut seoul, invited us to visit: rooms, an extraordinary exhibition by Lina Kim at columns gallery.when i first saw her photos i felt somehow shocked...out of breath.
surrounding us were pictures of a series of empty rooms, all of them had a window through which one could see a natural landscape.
the photographic interiors were realized throughout different seasons over the course of three years, between 2003 und 2006.
i think her eyes can capture something different, something concealed behind the scenes, a feeling of absence, of vanished human activity; a place where nature seems to be glimpsing at us from the outside, leaving one with the impression of being imprisoned in a dilapidated building, cut out from our own perceptions, in a stillshot of time where nature steps back, observing how we consume ourselves and vanish in decay.
the brazilian born Lina Kim (1965) also has Korean origins. she now lives between Berlin and New York.
