REVIEW: OPENING OF E’s SOLO EXHIBITION "SUPREMACISTS’ SALON"

dongmi lee • August 29. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
SEOUL• the opening of E's solo exhibition 'Supremacists’ Salon' was held @ PLATOON KUNSTHALLE on Aug.19. E presented compartments with tables in 4 colors in the venue. the colors are ‘white’, ‘yellow’, ‘brown’, ‘black’ so that people can easily recognized what the colors mean.

the opening started a little bit late, but people had enough things to see and enjoy already. E has researched in different sources regarding the topic racism and showed the result in different styles. On the screen you could see a person from the middle east being interviewed in the news about racism and in the showcases installations are exhibited. in contrast to the serious topic the music unexpectedly was in the genre of pop.

as the opening began the music went out and we could hear two people talking. this was acutally an interview with E by the english radio station in Gwangju, which fit the exhibition perfectly to explain the universe of E's works.

while the interview was playing the performance by EE, tilman and jason began. it was a short but intense performance which was called "stereotype". through the brutal performance where people were beaten up for no reason one could associate a part of racism.

It was an evening with a lot of friends and fans of E's. this exhibition which makes the audience confused and puts them into chaos, engaging them without asking, took place until the 28th of august. if you didn't have had the chance to see it, there are still the interesting catalog to pick up!

and don’t miss our 3rd artist-in-residence solo exhibition of tilman porschuetz, beginning on the 3rd of september, also with a spectacular opening performance!!!

PREVIEW · TILMAN PORSCHUETZ SOLO EXHIBITION

illa • August 27. 2010 • KUNSTHALLE
seoul · 3 sep – 13 sep 2010 / opening 3 sep · 7 pm

the mutual interest of tilman porschuetz’s works lies in the creation of social order, the interaction between the actors of society, and the exchange and dependencies between the sexes. during his residency at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE, the artist followed the traces of these issues, expressing and performing as a member of that same society.

in his solo exhibition “荒修行”(황수행- literally rough cleaning & return) tilman porschuetz sends the visitor on a journey with an undefined destination.

“‘Arbeit’ was the first word I was able to read in Korean. A word for part time employment or prostitution in Korea, the word for work in German, and the word for slavery in ancient Greece. The traces I followed showed me various opinions, morales, defenses, and reflections, and it seems to be the motor and creator of our existence. ‘Wer rastet,
der rostet’ (literally in German: ‘The resting one will rust!’)

There are many different ways in which I tried to get closer to an understanding of what social responsibility and personal interest are. There are many different perspectives that I wanted to see, and many different approaches where I tried to show or simply tried to defend my very own way of life.

In this exhibition I want to give the visitor the opportunity to enter a playground of metaphors, research, documentation, fiction, spirituality, humor, and physical involvement. A short "trip" from which you will return in no way that I can predict or want. It is like the Disneyland version of a pilgrimage, the cleaning of the soul as monks would do, the
prophet going to the mountain, or the mountain coming to the prophet. A constant distancing and closing-back-in on society. A balance between alienation and fading into invisibility with nature.

I am asking for reasons of abstraction, I am asking for the perception of abstraction, but every person will eventually find its own questions on the journey they go on. My thoughts are the map, Platoon the aquarium, and you are the visitor that might ask itself: Am I not Jesus? Or, even more simple than that. What I bring to this selected elite is the research I made with people who never actually met.

What you will see:
a mountain that is hanging out in the city,
a forest that I disciplined myself,
a man asking for his place,
a grave,
Rodin's Eve,
no prostitutes as in such,
flying monkeys,
a guided path,
a neon yellow Buddhist unisex monk,
a scuba diving mermaid,
Kim Tae Hee und Kim Yu Na,
many Dokdos’,
pictures of drugs,
pictures of me,
and maybe the one I love!

What you will hear:
Recordings of fast cars, of love, and rape,
the chants of monks,
the water of the sea,
the voices of my friends,
the sound of pouring beer and rain,
a Roland 707,
a shaking Japanese,
a wonderful after-hour with Cindy Sizer DJ Team.” (artist statement)

an opening performance directed and based on concepts by
tilman porschuetz and kara van.

performers and musicians:
jisuk ahn as emile,
kyu hee baik (knocksteady)
takahito irie (hana hanako, shalom salon),
benjamin domrich (dj team, shalom salon),
philipp schoepfer (45kilo, cindy sizer, shalom salon),
E (lee, hyunjoon) (EE, ninano schneider, foundation),
lenny correa (space beam A.I.R.)

sophie • August 23. 2010 • URBAN COMMUNICATION
BERLIN · we are mighty delighted to announce that the latest BACKJUMPS exhibition is about to open its doors at projektraum 1 / kunstraum kreuzberg / bethanien this weekend!

BACKJUMPS started out as an urban magazin with focus on streetart and subculture and has now turned into an exhibition series. this issue will be slightly different than all the other street expos you might have been to so far.

VOL 4.2. is made predominately for kids and of course for those of us who will never grow up. challenge for the artists thus was to create pieces that are to be interacted with and interpreted by a crowd of the max. age of 14. the concept is mirrored by the installation of the pieces themselves - hanging in kids height - and the posters, which are an invitation for all of us (and kids) to take out our colouring pen-sets and go crazy!

for everyone wanting to throw a bit of boozing into the mix, there will be an afterparty at HORST in kreuzberg on the 28th starting at around 10pm. (here is the facebook link)

GWANGJU · PLATOON is proud to announce the grand opening of KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU on 31 august 2010 · 7pm

as a part of the project "hub city of asian culture" KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU gives a preview on the cultural program and development to come with the completion of the asian culture center in the city of gwangju in 2014. with diverse events in cooperation with young creatives from korea and abroad, and exhibitions beyond the typical concept of galleries and museums, KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU offers a new way of experiencing culture: active involvement – not passive art consumption.

for the grand opening exhibition KUNSTHALLE GWANGJU is proud to present the worldwide first complete show of all works produced by swiss art group etoy.CORPORATION. etoy's activities deal with important aspects of life, such as life and death, money and games, supply and demand on the financial market, in a smart and playful way.

the art project etoy founded in 1994 came to its notorious reputation in the mid 90s through projects like the digital hijack (1.5 milion search engine users kidnapped in 1996) and the cultural battle with eToys.com. the only available artwork in the art market is the etoy.SHARE: unique swiss stock certificates that document etoy.HISTORY and represent the idea of sharing intangible assets such as knowledge, passion and cultural value.

all artworks ask for an active participation by the visitors. besides various performances with young local artists and lectures during the whole exhibition period, etoy will also present special projects, such as the encapsulation of a person from gwangju as a test pilot for the MISSION ETERNITY project or etoy.BROOD, where children can experience and play with artworks and become a part of an art project.
