moderat is a collaboration of three successful projects that joined forces to create a new audiovisual experience. on the audio side modeselektor and apparat (hence the name, moderat) put a lot of efforts into developing a unique sound. they rented studio space at the legendary berlin hansa studios (where david bowie recorded 'heroes') in order to record the album in analog with the help of the studio's vintage tube technology and an old emi console from 1972, restored especially for moderat. they even hired joshua kit clayton, an american software designer, to program a superb reverb algorithm specifically for the recording process of the album. They also bought an emt model 140 plate reverb on an internet auction and had to travel to los angeles to pick it up. for the album they worked together with rapper busdriver from los angeles, delle (aka eased) from germany's top act seeed and paul st. hilaire.

on the visual side one of berlin's first and finest vj crews, pfadfinderei, provided some exclusive visual material. in contrary to their fast club-based fast paced style they created a whole new visual experience through decelerated images. moderat was one of the main acts on this year's sonar festival in barcelona and tour worldwide with their show.

420ML GRAFFITI EXHIBITION @ PLATOON KUNSTHALLE IN SEOUL

420ml is korea's most representative graffiti collective. since 2005 they organized graffiti exhibitions to make the art of graffiti known to the public. this year's exhibition with the title 'dongmun seodab', which roughly means giving the totally wrong answer to a given question, is the result of the experiments the collective did until now.

this year's exhibition will be different from others. with the last four exhibitions, the 420ml crew presented different visual and conceptual perspectives on graffiti. by now, people not only know what graffiti is, but have an opinion about it - whether they like it or not. the 420ml members and the participating artists take the opportunity to reflect on the achievements and problems until now. this year it is the question of the conditions of communication, not only of graffiti, but also of language in a broader sense that moves the 420ml team. conceptually, this question will shine through in the artist's works and the program including workshops, guided tours and a discussion panel.

URBAN AFFAIRS EXTENDED

On the weekend i met up with my personal design heroes beata, oli and flo at their FUK Laboratory - they are in the final throes creating the identity for this years URBAN AFFAIRS that takes place at STATTBAD (guess what, it's a former swimming pool) just across the street.

"URBAN AFFAIRS extended, presents in this second edition, an International selection of world renowned Urban and Streetart artist. Following the motto of the exhibition name this year, numerous external artistic projects, Galleries and institutions are invited to a new exhibition space in an reappropriated Berlin Swimming pool, with over 2,000 square meters of space available. The focus is on the reunification of Urban and contemporary art, interactive performances site specific works with the utilisation of public spaces."

the vernissage is on July 1st (this Wendnesday) — it will be followed by the opening / fashionweek-afterparty on saturday and numerous other special events like workshops, performances, lectures and parties throughout the month.
