It's not Rio...

Excited by the great weather and all I heard about this big event, I didn't want to miss Berlin's unique "Karneval der Kulturen" on the last pentecost-weekend.

Leaving the metro station on Hermannplatz, I immediately dived into masses of people, who partied the streets of Kreuzberg. More than 4000 artists, representing 80 nations, entertaining over a million visitors - it was quite an impressive picture of Berlin's cultural diversity.

The procession, consisting of hundred different wagons, each representing an own cultural lifestyle, moved from Hermannplatz to Yorckstrasse - separated by dancing people, shaking their bodies to different sounds from all over the world.
It was real fun being among them, especially because of all those nice costumes and colorful appearances.

Never having seen it, i must admit on the downside, that the event also reminded me of the numerous pictures and clips of the famous Love Parade I saw throughout the media. Most people shook to the drum'n bass wagons and big transparents spanning the streets and reminding people to drink water, gave the carneval a special Berlin touch.

Nevertheless, all the artists did their best to show their way to party hilariously on this sunny weekend on the streets.

It's not Rio - it's Berlin, fine enough...?

amnesty international- signatures

In these dark ages of human rights infringements we have the duty to rise our voices and not to look away from uncomfortable realities. Amnesty International has always been an organization ready for intervention by any possible means. here is something that brings across the message...in order not to forget that our opinion makes a difference.

virtual may day on union island in secondlife

On May Day I went to the opening of Union Island, the brand new secondlife island for trade unions from all over the globe. I was greeted by John Wood from TUC (picture on the right), who also is the organizer of this international platform.
Here is a transcript of what happened over there:

john: hey Marcello!
john: happy may day!
You: Hi John how are you doing?
john: very good
Erdenesaikhan: Bro John, How much is the minimum wage for Germany?
john: ah Erdenes - here is PLATOON who is talking about that
You: hello everyone! Happy May Day!
You: Erdenes, unfortunately we don’t have a minimum wage in Germany…that’s why we are doing this campaign…and we are fighting to introduce a minimum-wage of 7.50euro per hour.
You: so, where are you guys writing from?
Erdenesaikhan: I'm from Mongolia, in Ulaanbaatar
You: oh wow
VarvaraUNI: i'm from russia
You: oh privet…
You: so you represent some of the russian and mongolian unions?
Erdenesaikhan: I represent Uni-lcm
VarvaraUNI: my union is trade union of managerial staff
You: hey Erdenes...nice flag
Erdenesaikhan: I did it, I'm very strong with my MAY DAY flag, Please give mongolian trade unionists some May day greeting...
You: We are all very glad to have this chance of being together on this important day… WORKERS DAY!...and hope we´ll make our voices heard in every corner of this planet… to represent all people who deserve a decent life and a fair pay for their work. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS!!!!
Erdenesaikhan: thank you so much!!!
john: Amen to that PLATOON!

john: So Marcello - how are things going in Mainz today, with the Real version of this exhibition??
You: im sure they are up and running with the puppets by now!
john: It must be hard to use the puppets all day! are they as big as the ones here in SL?
You: in proportion they are bigger but they arent very heavy.
Prometheus: what is "arm trotz arbeit?"
You: Arm Trotz Arbeit means WORKING POOR.
Prometheus: are there a lot of working poor in Germany, too? Are there hungry people in Germany? food pantries?
You: Uhmm...mostly ANGRY people..... but yes, in comparison to our society most of them are poorer.
but of course no one is really starving over here. Which is still not a reason to shut up and accept being paid a meagre wage. our campaign is in fact mostly about paying a fair wage for a good job, to good people.

You: hey john have you heard of Europe´s Workers Day in Slovenia? 35.000 unionist coming from all over europe gathered in Ljubljana at the beginning of april.
john: yes - a huge event. ETUC have some posters about it in our SL library. The size of the European demonstrations always embarasses us in the UK - we don't really have big demonstrations in our culture.
You: i went there to film the event and made this shortcut...you can watch it here.
john: thanks I will
john: did everyone see the ver.di film here yet? I think it's really impressive.. there aren't many unions in the world who think about campaigns on such a big scale, as ver.di…. very imaginative campaigning
You: well there will be many more RL events....and all the German unions are getting stronger these days.....
john: Do you think that such high profile campaigning is helping unions?
You: Well, it´s getting to the people!
john: The work with billboards and painted buildings must have been seen by millions in Germany
You: Yes, “genug gespart!” was a very successful nation wide campaign…. i think it´s good to find alternative ways to approach people...and also spend the money of our members wisely and in a constructive way.
john: It's interesting, as the campaigns cost a lot in Germany and many unions will not spend so much money but it seems to have been worth all the money.. for the campaign benefit and also for more members.
You: i think it is a duty of unions to reinvest the money given by their members to represent them better with effective campaigns.
john: Thanks for that PLATOON, and good luck with the ongoing campaign.

pecha kucha night seoul

last week the first pechakucha night seoul of this year took place in the house club m2. here are some of the highlights:

yong kwan presented a project called syllabrick, basically modular toy figures. the form of the modules is based on a linguistic research of phonemes of the korean language. he digged deeply, tracing its historical roots of hangul that at the same time represents the phonetic language and the cosmological relation between humans and the universe.

kim mujun has a passion for baseball fields, swimming pools, track fields and soccer fields. in a moment of boredom he looked for baseball fields, swimming pools etc. in google earth, collected them and turned his fascination into pieces of art, strict formal abstractions of such athletic areas.

my personal favourite was the presentation of the chill magazine, one of seoul's freshest underground magazines. so far three issues have been published, dealing with the city of seoul and the elderly. to be honest, i forgot what the last issue was about, but i love it for the diy 3d glasses...

next time we will introduce the KUNSTHALLE.seoul project so stay tuned ^^

Architectures of Survival

Spring is here ! After a cup of coffee on this nice and warm Sunday afternoon philipp and me headed over to sparwasser hq who were hosting 'Architectures of Survival' until yesterday, an exhibition curated by Brussel based collective Komplot.

After some explanations and chit chat with the curators, we strolled around in the rooms. Besides some smaller pieces of art, the results of a play-dooh explosion covering the whole room proves the open and process-oriented approach of the gallery. We like it !

A little later romanian architects ‚StudioBasar’ gave a really interesting lecture about legal housing evictions in Bucharest. (they promised to send some more pictures)

Since the fall of communism in Romania the law enables pre-communist house owners to reclaim their former property.

StudioBasars public proposal „Evicting the Ghost“ documents how law forces citizens, that moved in during communism, to evacuate their houses in order to return them to the former owners.

As a consequence and a form of protest, affected inhabitants move in so called „ghost houses“ - stacks of furniture wrapped in foil - on the sidewalks directly in front of their former domicile.

It’s quite impressive how they manage to handle this situation and improve the temporary „houses“ over time.

Artist Yan Renand works with different objects and creates a process of transformation by mixing painting, food and growing vegetation in plastic bags. He spent most of this evening in doing a “knitting” performance in which he created small objects made by strings.

In the basement of Sparwasser hq we found some interesting video works by Christine Woditschka , Meiya Lin and David Blandy which gave us reason to discuss our different tastes of visual art.

On top of all that, chatting with interesting people and drinking a beer in comfortable atmosphere, made it a really nice evening.

Friday! 2weeks ago ~ we met my dj friend sunny on the street in itaewon and she dragged us to her new club (very very tiny but cool^^) before open ceremony.....Tom fed some money in to a smiling big pig's ear woo~hahahahahahahaha~^^*
this ceremony is a very common thing in korea , no matter what religion you have-the pig is such a big symbol of luck and money in korea, maybe japan and china also.
If you dreamed about a pig then for sure go buy lotto!!! GOOD LUCK to you all.
Maybe PLATOON needs to prepare one for our opening hehehe...^^*
